Keydets Rally to Defeat The Mount, 8-7

Box Score

EMMITSBURG, Md. - Down 7-3 midway through the third quarter, the VMI lacrosse team rallied to score five unanswered goals the remainder of the game to come from behind and defeat Mount St. Mary's, 8-7, Friday afternoon at Waldron Family Stadium in Emmitsburg, Maryland.

The win is the first over The Mount since 2005 and just the third time in program history in a series that spans 27 all-time matches. The Keydets improve to 2-3 on the season while The Mount falls to 3-3. The win also marked the third career victory for VMI head coach James Purpura at the helm.

Tied at 1-1 after the opening period, The Mount scored three goals to VMI's two in the second to give the home team a slight 4-3 advantage at the break. Connor McMahon scored two goals for The Mount in the second quarter and Cormac Giblin added one, while VMI's Hartley Jordan and Scout Ripley scored for VMI.

"I'm proud of our guys for never giving up," said VMI head coach James Purpura. "We got down 7-3 but kept battling and were able to score the final five goals of the game to pull out a win. We have focused internally on self-improvement all year and it's great to see the guys rewarded for their resilience and effort. This was a tough win and every game is going to continue to test our toughness. We just want to keep getting better every day and the results will eventually fall into place. We will remain humble and hungry and look forward to getting back to work."

Mount St. Mary's came out firing on all cylinders to open the second half and logged three unanswered goals to go up, 7-3, at the 10:53 mark of the third period.

Undeterred, VMI responded with two goals to finish up the third quarter and added three more in the final quarter to tally five unanswered scores to win the game. The VMI defense stepped up and did not allow another Mount St. Mary's goal in the contest. In total, Mount St. Mary's registered 42 shot attempts on the afternoon to VMI's 29. In a complete game, VMI sophomore goalie Jack Liselli earned 12 saves for his first career win in the cage.

Senior Michael Santos scored at the 6:38 mark V the third period to end The Mount's three-score rally earlier in the quarter, and Jordan added his second goal of the game with one second on the clock to close the third quarter with VMI trailing, 7-5.

Aidan Riley scored his second goal of the season at the 9:15 mark of the final quarter to make the score 7-6 in favor of The Mount, and senior Josh Bass tied it up at 7-7 with only 4:14 left in regulation. Jordan tallied a hat trick for his game-winning goal with only 2:57 to play to give VMI its second road win of the season.

After Jordan's three goals on the day, Ripley finished with two goals during the match while Santos, Bass, and Riley notched the others. Defenders Alex Baber and Tim Lindenbaum led the Keydets with two caused turnovers each.

Faceoff specialist Gabe Eichler played a pivotal role in the victory by winning 12-16 faceoff attempts to go with seven groundball pickups.

Connor McMahon and Cormac Giblin led The Mount with two goals apiece while Brendan Lantieri, Kadin Kightlinger and Noah Daniels each tallied one.

VMI returns to action next Saturday, March 12, following a long road trip to Detroit, Michigan, to face Detroit Mercy for its second of three straight road contests.
