Box Score CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The VMI baseball team fell Wednesday afternoon 14-0 to the University of Virginia, ranked fourth this week in NCAA Division I by
Baseball America. The game was originally scheduled for Tuesday but moved to Wednesday due to inclement weather
.
The Cavaliers jumped on VMI early, scoring one run in the second and six in the third, including a two-run home run from Chris Newell. UVA tacked on three more runs each in the fourth and sixth frames. Devin Ortiz and Jake Gelof also homered.
Jacob Mustain hit a pinch hit double for VMI, while
Zac Morris,
Justin Starke,
Reeves Whitmore,
Justin Nase and
Ty Swaim each had hits on the afternoon. Whitmore,
Brett Cook and
Jed Barrett each drew a walk.
Will Lopez tossed 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief and
Ty Barker held the Cavaliers scoreless for an inning.
Ortiz also got the start on the mound for UVA (4-0), allowing just three hits over four innings with six strikeouts.
The
Keydets (1-3) will host Lafayette University in a three-game series this weekend at Gray-Minor Stadium. First pitches are slated for 3 p.m. Friday, 2 p.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. Sunday.
