Keydets Strong on Day One of Keydet Invitational

LEXINGTON, Va. – The VMI track and field teams are off to a great start at the 2022 Keydet Invitational after earning several personal bests and finals qualifying marks Friday at the Corps Physical Training Facility.

The distance medley relay team of Gretal Shank, Marissa Linkous, Ahliyah Williams and Rachael Dickenson placed second overall in 12:56.46.

Freshman Eleyah Armstrong again had a strong performance by placing fourth in the 60-meter dash preliminaries in 7.89 seconds to advance to Saturday's final at 10:55 a.m.

"We continue to move forward and get a little better each day at practice," said VMI Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Zack Scott. "This weekend, Day 1 we saw the results with personal bests. Stephanie Jones had a three-foot improvement. Jordin Poindexter had a second straight meet with a PR and Johnnie Walker in the 60m preliminary race. Keyandre Midget, Xander Topos and Stephen Munson had new PRs in the 60m hurdles preliminary race."

Ahliyah Williams came in fourth in the 400-meter dash in 59.45 seconds.

Multiple Keydets showed well in the 1000-meter run led by sophomore Naomi Hahn's fifth-place mark of 3:17.84. Emily Wells placed eighth in 3:35.09 and Caroline Fiorillo placed 10^th in 3:46.43. Sophomore Alyssa Ingerson arrived in 11^th overall in 3:48.81.

In the field events, Stephanie Jones paced the Keydets in the weight throw with a sixth-place weight throw of 14.71 meters. Sophomore Jenna Kirkland also competed in the events and landed in 11^th place at 11.59 meters.

Marissa Linkous earned a sixth-place height of 2.90 meters in the pole vault and freshman Yvonnia Perrello finished tied for fifth at 1.45 meters.

The Keydets return to action Saturday morning for Day 2 of the Keydet Invitational.
