Keydets Impressive in Season-Opening VMI Team Challenge

LEXINGTON, Va. – The VMI women's track and field team started the 2022 indoor season in impressive fashion with several personal bests at Saturday's VMI Team Challenge at the Corps Physical Training Facility.

Freshman sprinter and jumper Eleyah Armstrong had a strong showing in her Keydet debut by placing second overall in the long jump at 5.45 meters. She also placed fourth in the both the 60-meter preliminaries and finals with respective finishes of 7.90 seconds and 7.82 seconds.

"This was a great meet for our team to start off our season," said VMI Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Zack Scott. "We had a personal best in almost every event thanks to our incredible coaching staff. We maximized a week of training two times a day.  The team has set a new standard for our program as we prepare for the conference championships."

Fellow freshman Gretal Shank placed fourth in the 800-meter run in 2:26.40 and followed up with a fifth-place mark in the mile run with a time of 5:31.37.

Senior sprinter Ahliyah Williams came in fifth place in the 800-meter with a time of 2:28.71

Rachael Dickenson competed in the 3,000-meter run and registered a ninth-place time of 11:09.66 to round out the top marks of the day for the VMI women's team.

The Keydets return to action next weekend hosting the Keydet Invitational Friday and Saturday, Jan. 21-22, at the CPTF.
