VMI at Cornell Gameday Central

LEXINGTON, Va. – Playing a second consecutive game on the road, the VMI football team will face Ivy League opponent Cornell University Saturday afternoon at Schoellkopf Field in Ithica, New York.
 
The first game ever between the two programs, the contest will be broadcast at 2 p.m. on ESPN+. The Keydets (1-1) face a Big Red squad playing its first game since 2019 as the Ivy League sat out the 2020 coronavirus season.

KEYDETS CLOSE OUT NON-CONFERENCE SCHEDULE – Saturday's game at Cornell will mark the final of three non-conference games for VMI in the 2021 fall schedule. VMI begins Southern Conference action at home September 25 against Wofford.
 
VMI vs. IVY LEAGUE – The September 18 VMI-Cornell game will mark the first time VMI has played an Ivy League opponent in football since 1939 when the Keydets played at Columbia University. VMI was scheduled to play Princeton in 2020 in Lexington but the game was canceled because of COVID.
 
RICE BROTHERS SHINE – Redshirt sophomore place kicker Jerry Rice kicked his third consecutive field goal over 40 yards when he connected on a 43-yarder last Saturday against Kent State and younger brother Hunter, a freshman running back, scored his first touchdown in the fourth quarter with a two-yard burst. Hunter also excelled on special teams delivering a big hit on return coverage.
 
HERRES EXTENDS STREAK – VMI senior All-America wide receiver Jakob Herres extended his consecutive games streak with a reception to 22 after catching four against Kent State last Saturday.

KEYDETS No. 22 IN RANKINGS – VMI enters week three of the 2021 fall season ranked #22 in the Stats Perform FCS Top 25 poll.
 
A VMI Win over Cornell would ...
--- Give the Keydets the first win of the initial meeting between VMI and Cornell
--- Be VMI's fourth road victory over the last five trips dating back to the spring 2021 season.
