Keydets Fall 4-3 in Close Battle with Iona

Box Score

LEXINGTON, Va. – Rallying for three goals in a six-minute span to take a 3-2 lead early in the second half, the VMI women's soccer team ultimately fell by a 4-3 score as the visiting Iona College Gaels scored two goals soon afterward to escape Patchin Field with a victory.

Down 2-0 at the half, the Keydets (0-3-0) scored three goals from the 50:18 mark to the 56:55 mark to earn their first lead of the season. Sophomore Ella Flickinger scored her first career goal for VMI's first goal of the season as she took a rebound off a Maria Vargas shot that was deflected off the Iona keeper and kicked it in to cut the deficit to 2-1.

Less than a minute later, freshman Lauren Fyfe took a cross from Vargas and put the ball in the net to knot the score at two apiece. Freshman Riley Flanagan penetrated the Gael defense a second straight time to set up the scoring opportunity for the Keydets.

Moments later, Vargas took a free kick opportunity to nudge the ball over to fellow senior Sarah Anschutz, who crossed it over to Flanagan. Flanagan saw an open net and slipped the ball behind the Iona keeper to put VMI up, 3-2, with a little over 30 minutes to play.

"It was a tough one today," said VMI head coach Chris Haught-Thompson. "We didn't necessarily give our best go of it in the first half but I was really proud of how we responded in the second half to go up 3-2. The next step for us is just making sure we finish. It was certainly an exciting game to watch. "

Just three minutes later, the Gaels' Kedarjah Lewis scored twice off consecutive assists from Graceann Murphy as the latter goal at the 59:47 mark proved to be the game-winner.

Senior Whitney Edwards-Roberson led the Keydets with four shot attempts while Flanagan, Flickinger, Vargas and Fyfe all had two. Vargas finished the game with three assists while Flanagan was credited with two.

Murphy led the Gaels with three shot attempts while Drake and Lewis both finished with two. Murphy also totaled three assists of her own to lead the Gael attack.

VMI has a quick turnaround as the Keydets will face Winthrop University Saturday at 1 p.m. at Patchin Field.
