LEXINGTON, Va. – The VMI baseball team will host division-leading Samford University (Ala.) this weekend in an important three-game Southern Conference series in Gray-Minor Stadium. The schedule includes a doubleheader slated for Friday at 2 p.m. and a single game Saturday at 1 p.m.
All three games will be broadcast on ESPN+.
The Keydets put themselves squarely in the SoCon playoff hunt with a three-game sweep of The Citadel last weekend. VMI is 9-12 in the SoCon 'Blue' Division, trailing second-place ETSU (9-11) by only a half of game. Samford leads the division and is tied for the conference's best record at 14-7.
Several Keydets had big series against The Citadel.
Justin Starke hit .500 with an on-base percentage of .625, a slugging percentage of .667 with four runs and four RBI.
Callen Nuccio hit .444 with a double, two triples, four walks and six runs scored. He had a .615 on-base percentage and a 1.000 slugging percentage.
Zac Morris hit .417 with a home run, four RBI and three stolen bases and
Will Knight had a .357 batting average with runs scored.
The VMI bullpen didn't give up a run in six innings of relief.
Sam Ewald,
Will Lopez and
Trey Morgan each threw two innings and allowed just six baserunners combined.
Samford (24-19/14-7) has lost three-straight SoCon series entering this weekend, dropping two of three games to Western Carolina, Mercer and Wofford.
