VMI Baseball Series at WCU Moved Back

LEXINGTON, Va. – The VMI baseball team will travel to Western Carolina University this weekend for a three-game Southern Conference series. The contests that were originally scheduled for Friday and Saturday are now set for a Saturday doubleheader at 2 p.m. and a Sunday single game at 3 p.m. due to impending adverse weather conditions.

Entering the weekend, each game of the three-game series is scheduled to be broadcast on ESPN+. Based on the weather forecasts, game times and broadcast plans are subject to change.

Pursuant to current state of North Carolina Executive Orders for outdoor venue attendance and using physical distancing guidelines through university standards, a limited number of seats are available for spectators at Childress Field / Hennon Stadium this spring with priority given to the parents of competing student-athletes. At this time, there are no additional single-game ticket sales for home games available.

VMI red-shirt sophomore Will Knight is swinging a hot bat entering play at WCU. In a three-game set at Samford last weekend, the right fielder hit .571 last week in a three-game set at Samford. He crushed two home runs and had seven RBI and five runs scored. He had an on base percentage of .600 and a slugging percentage of 1.071. Knight has reached base in 22 of VMI's 23 games this season.

Red-shirt junior Cody Warner also hit .571 last week. The leadoff man had a .600 on base percentage and scored four times. Red-shirt sophomore Adam Jewell was outstanding in relief in the series finale Saturday, tossing five shutout innings with three hits, no walks with four strikeouts to keep the Keydets within striking distance.

VMI defeated WCU twice in the three-game series in the 2019 season, both victories in extra innings. Will Lopez tossed three innings of shutout ball to earn the win in the first win and Knight went 3-6 with three RBI and a walk. Noah Cook had two hits, a double, two runs and two RBI. Lopez earned the win again in relief in the series finale, 9-8 in 10 innings. Callen Nuccio drove home the winning run with a double and Knight homered and had three RBI.
