Keydets Fall to Chattanooga, 2-0

LEXINGTON, Va. – In the final game of the season, the VMI women's soccer team showed grit and a strong fight in a 2-0 loss to visiting Chattanooga Saturday afternoon at Patchin Field.

The Keydets (1-8-2, 0-8-1) started with a strong offensive sequence that had a shot by Kiley Cropper that hit the crossbar, rebounded and shot by Whitney Edwards-Roberson that required a goalie save. The ball bounced away and Cropper got another foot on it but Mocs keeper Abbey Saddler earned another save on the attack.

VMI continued the pressure with shots by Maria Vargas and Morgan Anderson. However, Chattanooga (7-2-1, 6-2-1 SoCon) scored at the 18:40 mark on a cross by Mackenzie Smith that Emily Szymanski headed in for what proved to be the game-winning goal.

The second half featured a continued offensive attack by the Keydets, but at 61:28 the Mocs possessed the ball again and scored off a cross by Samantha Shaw to Chloe Arnold for the 2-0 insurance goal.

VMI sophomore Sam Fee added a shot attempt, with Vargas and Cropper tallying additional shots on goal. Ella Flickinger had a shot just high of the net, and Katie Orndorff logged a shot, as well. Edwards-Roberson had back-to-back close chances to get the Keydets on the board, but Saddler was there to make the saves.

The Keydets finished with a season-high 19 shots while Chattanooga managed 10 attempts. Both teams were even with three corner kicks. VMI senior keeper Sidney Swoope finished with six saves, while Chattanooga's Saddler finished with nine.
