LEXINGTON, Va. – The VMI baseball team travels to Charleston, S.C. this weekend for a Southern Conference series at The Citadel. The first game is slated for Friday at 6 p.m. and a doubleheader is scheduled for Saturday beginning at 2 p.m.
All three games will be broadcast on ESPN+.
VMI fell 15-5 at VCU Tuesday, despite back-to-back home runs from
Cole Jenkins and
Nathan Loyd in the bottom of the fourth to tie the game 4-4.
Justin Starke reached base safely in all five of his plate appearances, recording a hit, three walks and a HBP.
Callen Nuccio and
Will Knight each had two hits on the night.
Starke hit .438 last week, with .500 on base and slugging percentages. He scored five runs and had three RBI. He is hitting .481 in April, with four doubles and three home runs. Starke has 13 RBI and 15 runs in 14 games this month, with a .571 on base percentage and a .731 slugging percentage.
The Keydets and the Bulldogs last faced off in the 2019 season, with The Citadel taking two of the three games, including a 3-2, 10-inning contest. VMI got good starting pitching in the series from current hurlers
Jacob Menders and
Adam Jewell. Menders tossed a complete game in the Keydets' opening 9-5 win, and Jewell was the tough-luck loser in a 1-0 defeat in the second game, holding the Bulldogs scoreless after the first frame.
The Citadel has lost five-straight games entering the weekend series.
