Wachenheim Tabbed State Coach of Year; Herres Earns Receiver Honor

Touchdown Club of Richmond - Complete list of award winners

LEXINGTON, Va. – VMI head football coach Scott Wachenheim has been presented the Bobby Ross Coach of the Year Award honoring the Commonwealth's top Division I college football coach.

The award, presented annually by the Touchdown Club of Richmond, was announced Saturday night.

Wachenheim led the Keydets to a regular season record 6-1 record, the program's first SoCon title in 43 years and the program's first-ever FCS playoff appearance in his sixth season at the helm. Earlier this week, he was named one of 16 national finalists for the Stats Perform Eddie Robinson Coach of the Year award, and was named Southern Conference Coach of the Year for the second straight season. The 2020-21 campaign marked the program's first winning season since 1981.

"It's a great honor to receive the state coach of the year award given by the Richmond Touchdown Club," said Wachenheim. "Especially realizing the award is named after Bobby Ross, a famous VMI alumnus who has been a true mentor to me throughout my career and encourager to me as I've been head coach at VMI. I'm very appreciative of my staff and our cadet-athletes to help win this award and a big thank you to Richmond Touchdown Club for honoring me, my staff, and our players."

Junior wide receiver Jakob Herres was also honored by the Touchdown Club of Richmond Saturday night and was named offensive end Player of the Year for NCAA state Division I colleges and universities.

Herres, named Southern Conference Offensive Player of the Year on Thursday, led the Keydets in receiving this regular season with 67 catches for 807 yards and seven touchdowns, averaging 12.0 yards per grab and 115.3 yards per game, all of which lead the Southern Conference. Herres is a finalist for the Stats Perform Walter Payton Award for the national FCS Offensive Player of the Year.
