LEXINGTON, Va. – The VMI baseball team will travel to Samford University (Ala.) this weekend for a three-game Southern Conference series. The two teams will begin with a doubleheader Friday at 3 p.m. (EST), followed by a single game Saturday at 2 p.m. (EST).

Samford enters the weekend competition atop the Southern Conference's Blue Division with a 5-1 SoCon record. The Terriers swept UNCG earlier this season and took two of three against ETSU last weekend.

The Keydets are 2-4 thus far in conference action. Red-shirt sophomore Will Knight had a big series against UNCG last weekend, hitting .455 in three starts in right field. He blasted two home runs and finished with a .571 on base percentage and 1.000 slugging percentage. Freshman third baseman Ty Swaim hit .444 with a .545 on base percentage and Cole Garrett hit .500 and lofted a home run. Sam Ewald threw three hitless innings with one walk in the series finale on Saturday.

In six Southern Conference games, red-shirt freshman Justin Starke leads the team with a .333 average, and on base and slugging percentages of .429 and .542, respectively. Red-shirt freshman Trey Morgan has a win and a save, and opening game starter Nathan Light has a 4.72 ERA in 13.1 innings with 11 strikeouts in SoCon play.
