Keydets Hang Tough with UNCG, Fall 1-0

Box Score

LEXINGTON, Va. – Despite a strong first half, the VMI women's soccer team fell 1-0 to University of North Carolina at Greensboro Saturday afternoon on Patchin Field.

The Keydets (1-6-2, 0-6-1) had possession for most of the first half with opportunities from Whitney Edwards-Roberson, and a shot by Maggie Beckman requiring a save by UNCG goalie Aiyanah Tyler-Cooper.

The Spartans (3-4-2, 3-3-1 SoCon) had a couple of shots in the first half, but VMI goalie Sidney Swoope made four saves to keep the score tied 0-0 at halftime.

The second half started strong for the Keydets with more shots by Sarah Anschutz and Maria Vargas. However, a miscue by the VMI backline led to a UNCG goal by Maddy Gilhool at 60:41.

VMI put on the pressure with shots by Sam Fee, Amber Risheg, Natalie Carpenter, and Anschutz. Despite the offensive attack, UNCG held on to win 1-0.

The Spartans held the shot advantage 16-8 and edged VMI in corner kicks 3-2. Swoope finished with seven saves, with Tyler-Cooper finished with four.

The Keydets will host Samford University on Thursday, set for a 4 p.m. start on Patchin Field.
