Keydets 5-0 with Comeback Win over Wofford

Box Score Box Score

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Finding itself trailing four times throughout the game, the VMI football team made one final rally in the final minutes to earn a 36-31 come-from-behind win over host Wofford College Saturday afternoon at Gibbs Stadium in Spartanburg, South Carolina.

With the win, VMI (5-0, 5-0) improved to 5-0 on the season, its best record to open a season since last accomplishing the feat in 1960. The win also ensured VMI its first winning season since 1981 as the Keydets find themselves as the lone unbeaten team in the Southern Conference after Mercer defeated Chattanooga Saturday.

The Keydets are now 3-0 on the road this season and won for the first time in Spartanburg in eight meetings. It is VMI's first win over the Terriers (1-3, 1-3) since the 2002 campaign.

"The kids kept believing and kept fighting," said VMI head coach Scott Wachenheim. "I was proud of the team finding a way to win."

Playing without injured offensive standouts Reece Udinski, Korey Bridy and Leroy Thomas, VMI backup quarterback Seth Morgan willed the team to victory in his first career start. The redshirt freshman from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, threw four touchdown passes in the second half as he went 25-34 for 375 yards, which is the 10th best single passing game in VMI history.  He also rushed for 76 yards as the team totaled 451 yards of total offense, the second best tally in program history.

Junior wideout Jakob Herres made a career-high 15 grabs for 207 yards in a standout performance. His three touchdown receptions gives him 19 for his career – second most in program history – and only one behind career leader Mark Stock (1984-88).

The Keydets trailed 10-0 early in the first quarter but cut it to 10-7 following a 6-yard run by freshman Grant Swinehart. Behind 17-7 at the half, Morgan connected with Herres on a 21-yard pass and minutes later hit freshman Chance Knox on a 17-yard pass to put the Keydets ahead, 20-17, with one quarter to play.

Wofford scored on a 10-yard run early in the fourth quarter, but VMI pulled ahead again on a 15-yard touchdown pass to Herres and a 28-yard field goal by Jerry Rice to make the score 30-24 with under two minutes to play.

Terrier quarterback Jimmy Weirick quickly connected with receiver Landon Parker on a 75-yard pass to move Wofford back ahead 31-30 with only 1:43 on the clock.

VMI responded by moving down the field in 1:03 and Morgan found Herres a final time for a 14-yard game-winning TD reception with only 35 seconds to go.

The Keydets return to Foster Stadium next Saturday for a 1:30 kickoff against ETSU as VMI looks to remain undefeated on the season.
