Rachel Ahumada Earns MAAC ROTW

EDISON, N.J. – VMI freshman Rachel Ahumada earned Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Women's Water Polo Rookie of the Week honors Thursday.

The Simi Valley, Calif. native had three goals, two assists, four steals and two drawn exclusions against Gannon University Sunday in a tough OT loss in a match played at Salem University (W. Va.).

"Rachel has been a real presence in our games with her speed and quick steals," said head coach Danielle Montenegro. "Any time she is in the pool, I can count on her to bring some energy both in her defense and in her counter attacks. It has been exciting to watch her play, and to see how quickly she has picked up on our team goals and strategies. I look forward to seeing her development with still so many years ahead of her."

For the season, Ahumada has 12 goals and eight assists, and leads the team with 16 steals. She also has drawn 14 exclusions, second on the team.

VMI hosts MAAC foes La Salle (10 a.m.) and Villanova (2 p.m.) Universities Saturday in Clark King Pool.
