LEXINGTON, Va. – The VMI wrestling team defeated The Citadel for the fourth-straight season Friday night in a Southern Conference tri-match 27-18, but fell to Appalachian State 33-12. Sophomore Zach Brown and freshman Tyler Mousaw recorded pins in both matches for VMI in action from Cormack Hall.
Brown pinned his foe from The Citadel in 2:42 at 184, followed by Mousaw right after in 4:48 to seal the win for VMI. Freshman Luke Fegley won by pin at 133 as time expired in the first period and freshman Blake Showers pinned his Bulldog opponent in 1:20. Sophomore Job Chishko earned a 5-3 victory at 149.
Brown rallied late in his match against Appalachian State to pull ahead and scored a pin with just six seconds left. Mousaw won by pin at 197 in 5:47 and Showers was tied in his match at 9 at the conclusion, but his opponent earned a point of riding time for the tight victory.
VMI (4-5/3-4 SoCon) will close out the 2021 regular season Wednesday at home against Presbyterian College in a match rescheduled from Jan. 16. The Southern Conference clash will start at 5 p.m. and will honor the program's two seniors, Cliff Conway and Will Lawrence, after Senior Night was pushed back.
