Five Keydets Place at Southeast Open

SALEM, Va. – The VMI wrestling team had five of its members place Sunday as the Keydets opened the 2021-22 season at the Southeast Open (formerly the Hokie Open) at the Cregger Center at Roanoke College.

Junior Zach Brown placed second at 184 pounds in the Open Competition. Brown won four matches, two by pin, and suffered his only loss to two-time All-American Hunter Bolen from Virginia Tech.

Sophomore Isaac Dolph took third in the 285 Freshman/Sophomore competition, Blake Showers was fourth at 157, Justin Hart was fourth at 184 and Mike Tandurella placed sixth at 133 pounds.

Dolph defeated two opponents on the day, one by fall, while Showers pinned three-straight foes on his way to the semifinals. Hart opened the day with a 4-2 decision and Tandurella won three matches.

Jon Hoover won a pair of matches at 174 in the Open bracket, while Solomon Harris notched a technical fall win at 285 pounds.

Other good performances in freshman/sophomore competition included Sam Congleton with three wins, two by fall, at 125, Freddy Junko with three wins at 141 and Joel Diaz with two wins at 174.

The Keydets will compete in the Journeymen Classic next Sunday in Manheim, Pa. at the Spooky Nook Sports Complex.
