VMI battled to a 3-3 double overtime tie Saturday against visiting UNC-Asheville in a non-conference action.
The Keydets struck early and often offensively, finding the back of the net on each of their first three shots. Freshman
Grant Martin opened the scoring just 48 seconds in on a feed from fellow freshman
Cole Mooney. Martin found sophomore
Warner Collier at the 5:27 mark and Mooney made the score 3-0 on a pass from freshman
Woongchan Oh just 12:35 into the game.
Broden Schull made 11 saves on the afternoon.
Furman defeated the Keydets 6-0 last season. The Paladins are 5-8-1 overall, 3-2 in conference play, and have won their last two games, 2-1 against ETSU and UNC-Asheville. At UNC-A on Wednesday, Furman trailed 1-0 late but Jake Raine and Miles
Fenton scored in the final 20 minutes. Fenton's goal with just six minutes left was his first of the season.
The seven-team Southern Conference Tournament will start Monday, with matchups and game times to be announced later this weekend.
