RICHMOND, Va. – VMI red-shirt sophomore outfielder Will Knight earned first-team honors Wednesday with the release of the annual Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) University Division All-State baseball team. It marks the sixth-straight year a Keydet has garnered all-state baseball accolades, Knight is the third first-teamer named over that span.
Knight ripped three hits five times over VMI's abbreviated 2020 season, and had eight multi-hit games in his 15 starts. For a nine-game stretch he was among the hottest hitters in the nation, going 20-32 for a .625 batting average, six doubles and a triple for a .657 on base percentage and .875 slugging average.
For the season, Knight ranked third in the Southern Conference with a .431 batting average, and was seventh in slugging (.586) and eighth in on-base percentage (.484). He tied for the SoCon lead with 25 hits and tied for third with seven doubles. Knight was named the SoCon Player of the Week on February 24.
In total, 10 Commonwealth schools were represented with the University of Virginia having the most honorees at seven. Virginia Tech, William & Mary and Old Dominion each tallied four selections, with James Madison, VCU and Radford having multiple selections. VMI, Liberty and Richmond earned one selection each. Virginia and Virginia Tech split this year's specialty awards with the Hokies' Carson Taylor and Ian Seymour earning Player and Pitcher of the Year, respectively, with the Cavalier's Chris Newell and Brian O'Connor earning Rookie and Coach of the Year.
