CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Former VMI basketball standout Stan Okoye '13 has been named to the Big South Conference 2010-19 Men's Basketball All-Decade Team presented by Hercules Tires.
Okoye, a 6-6 forward from Raleigh, North Carolina, finished his VMI career (2009-13) as the program's fourth-leading scorer with 2,146 points and second leading rebounder (962). He was named the 2012-13 Big South Player of the Year. Since graduating from the Institute with a degree in economics and business, Okoye has played professionally overseas, most recently with Tecnyconta Zaragoza in Spain and was a member of the Denver Nuggets and Boston Celtics Summer League teams the past two years.
Okoye, whose parents are native Nigerians who moved to the United States, also participated in the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio as a member of the Nigerian basketball team. He is believed to be only the second VMI alumnus to participate in the Olympics.
VMI was a member of the Big South Conference from 2003 through 2014 before returning to the Southern Conference for the 2014-15 athletic year.
The Big South's All-Decade Teams were first unveiled as part of the Big South's 30th Anniversary celebration in 2013-14 to recognize the student-athletes and coaches who excelled in their respective sport in each decade since the Conference's founding in 1983.
A 15-person committee of Big South Conference administrators served as the official voting panel to determine the All-Decade Team, with fan voting comprising 20 percent of the overall total. The 2010-19 Men's Basketball All-Decade Team is listed on the link provided.
Okoye becomes the second Keydet athlete honored as part of the Big South Conference 2010-2019 All-Decade team awards as former VMI pole vaulter Kate Collins '14 was announced to the Women's Indoor Track team on Tuesday.
