Johnson records 1,000th career point in tough road loss at SMU

DALLAS — For the second-consecutive game, senior TJ Johnson led VMI in the scoring column with a team-high 19 points in a 95-70 road loss at SMU on Thursday night at Moody Coliseum.

It was a first-time meeting between the two schools and a rare trip for the Keydets (1-1) to the state of Texas.

Johnson recorded his 1,000th career point in a VMI uniform after making his first attempt at the free throw line at the 2:11 minute mark of the first half. He is currently on a nine-game double-digit scoring streak dating back to early February including 17 points in the team's season opener against Virginia University Lynchburg. In that stretch, Johnson has averaged 17.9 points per contest.

After a low-scoring first half, the Keydets went neck-and-neck with SMU (48 second-half points) scoring 42 second-half points.

The Mustangs (2-0), who reached the NCAA Tournament a year ago, were led by a 21-point effort from Oziyah Sellers.

Making Every Shot Count
The Keydets shot a season-best 87.9 percent (29-of-33) from the charity stripe at SMU. Johnson was one of five players to go perfect from the line making all nine of his attempts. He was joined by freshman Rokas Zilys (4-4), sophomore Paulius Narvilas (2-2), sophomore Alexander Daushvili (2-2) and freshman Zion Vaamonde (1-1). Senior Rickey Bradley, Jr. went 6-of-8 from charity to end the night with 13 points and five rebounds.
