LEXINGTON, Va. – Highlighted by
Ahliyah Williams' first-place finish in the women's 400 meter, the VMI track and field teams earned excellent marks to finish the 2020 SoCon Indoor Track and Field Championships Sunday at the Corps Physical Training Facility.
The VMI men placed fourth overall with 64 points over the two days while the VMI women came in sixth with 45 points. The women's point total was just six away from a program record and the men's fourth-place finish is an improvement of three spots from a year ago. The Samford men (190 points) won their first SoCon title in program history and the Samford women (177.5) claimed their fifth straight SoCon title.
Williams took first in the 400 meter with a time of 56.66 seconds right before junior
Ariana Ruffin arrived in second in 56.68 seconds. Freshman
Marissa Linkous took eighth place in 1:00.41 to earn additional team points for the VMI women.
Senior
Jahanzib Shahbaz placed second in the men's 800 meter with a time of 1:52.07 just behind Furman's Ryan Adams who set a facility and SoCon indoor record in 1:50.37.
The women's 4x400 relay team of

Julianne Knoblett, Ruffin and Williams placed fourth in the event with a school record time of 3:52.78. On the men's side of the 4x400, the VMI team of

"I'm really proud of how the team competed," said VMI head coach
Darrin Webb. "I asked them to stay focused and compete to the very finish. We will continue to work and move forward into the outdoor season.
"We will travel to Boston next weekend for the IC4A/ECAC meet and it looks like we will have record numbers make that trip. We will know for sure after accepted entries come out on Monday night. Again, I'm proud of both teams and excited about the future."
Sophomore
Jordin Poindexter came in fourth place in the men's 60 meter finals with a time of 6.95 seconds. He would later also claim fourth in the 200 meter with a time of 21.92 seconds.
