VMI Baseball Nearly Pulls off upset, but UVA wins 4-3
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The VMI baseball team held a 3-0 lead Wednesday after six frames, but the University of Virginia narrowly avoided the upset in a 4-3 come-from-behind win in non-conference play. VMI outhit the 2015 NCAA Division I Champions 8-3.
A pair of freshmen held the Cavaliers offense silent for the first six innings. Right-hander
Ben Capehart started and allowed just one hit with no walks over two frames, followed by four scoreless innings from
Trey Morgan, a lefty. Morgan struck out three and gave up just one hit and one walk.
The Keydets struck for three runs in the top of the fifth inning.
Zac Morris singled with one out and
Callen Nuccio reached base on an error. Following the second out of the inning, Morris stole third and scored on a
Jon Clines single. Red-shirt sophomore
Will Knight doubled to leftfield to plate Nuccio and Clines.
The Cavaliers loaded the bases in the seventh without recording a hit. After single scored one run, a passed ball made it a one-run game. A balk and an RBI groundout gave Virginia the lead.
Knight finished the afternoon 3-4 with two doubles and Clines had two hits.
Cody Warner doubled and Morris had a hit and a walk.
Stephen Schoch struck out the side in the ninth for the save for Virginia (2-2).
VMI (1-3) opens its home season this weekend against Lafayette College. The games are scheduled for Friday at 3 p.m., Saturday at 2 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m. in Gray-Minor Stadium.
