Water Polo Opens Season with 13-12 Win over Salem

ERIE, Pa. – The VMI women's water polo team defeated Salem International University (W. Va.) 13-12 to open the 2019 season Friday in a contest hosted by Mercyhurst University at the Prep-Villa Event Center.

Salem opened an 11-9 lead with 4:43 remaining in the fourth quarter. The Keydets found the back of the net four-straight times on tallies from Makenna Moore, McKenna Imset (twice) and Emma Noble. The Tigers cut the lead to one with 1:18 on the clock, but VMI got a stop in the closing seconds and was able to run the clock out.

Imset, a red-shirt freshman, had a game-high five goals for VMI. Sarah Dolitsky had a hat trick and Noble finished with two goals. Genevieve Petrassi and Emma Perez also scored.

Annefleur ten Bloemendal had four goals for Salem.  

Isabel French made six saves for VMI (1-0). The Keydets continue the Laker Classic Saturday at Mercyhurst, facing Gannon University at 12:30 p.m. and St. Francis (Pa.) at 8:15 p.m.
