Barkley Named MAAC Offensive Player of the Week

EDISON, N.J. – After opening the 2018 water polo season with 25 goals over five matches, VMI senior center Shelby Barkley was named the MAAC Offensive Player of the Week announced by the league office Wednesday.

VMI's all-time leading scorer and a three-time All-MAAC honoree, the Riverside, California, native scored four goals Friday night against Washington & Jefferson, then scored a total of 21 goals in the Laker Invitational Saturday and Sunday. She scored six against Saint Francis (Pa.), six versus La Salle, six against Gannon and added another three versus tourney host Mercyhurst.

It was the first time in her career she had three consecutive matches with at least six goals scored. Barkley has now scored six or more goals in a single match seven times over her VMI tenure (3x 2018, 2x 2017, 1x 2016, 1x 2015). With a full senior season to play, she now has 232 career goals as a Keydet.

In addition to her 25 goals, Barkley also drew 20 exclusions and had eight steals and 10 blocks over the weekend.

This is the second time in her career she has earned the weekly honor from the MAAC as she earned it once last season following the team's trip to California in March.

Katherine Campbell of Wagner was named the Defensive Player of the Week while Kelsey Snelgar of St. Francis (Brooklyn) was named Rookie of the Week.

The Keydets return to competition Mar. 3-4 at the Hoosier Invitational hosted by Indiana University.
