BOONE, N.C. - The #24 Appalachian State Mountaineers used a technical fall in the 141-pound match to break a 3-3 tie and went on to a 27-9 victory over the VMI Keydets in Southern Conference wrestling action Thursday night in Boone, N.C.
The two schools were tied, 3-3, after a Dominick Gallo win had averted Dalton Henderson's loss at 125. The decision loss for Henderson snapped an 11-match win streak, but Gallo rebounded with a 6-4 win at 133. Michael Gallo, however, knocked off Hunter Starner 15-0 and the home squad would not trail again.
"We wrestled differently this week compared to last week," said VMI head coach Chris Skretkowicz. "We reacted better and got to our attacks. We won two of the 10 bouts and lost two matches by one point. For wrestling a Top 25 team, we battled hard but I'm never content with losing."
VMI's (3-9, 1-6 SoCon) other victories on the evening came courtesy of Neal Richards, who downed David Peters-Logue 8-3 at 157, and Derek Thurman, who picked up a 6-0 shutout win at 184. Thurman knocked off Taylor Jackson in the victory.
VMI wrestling will return to action Feb. 18, when the Keydets close out the regular season at George Mason. Action in Fairfax, Va. is set for 7 p.m.
