Lacrosse Falls to Richmond, 20-1

RICHMOND, Va. - The Richmond Spiders scored the first 19 goals of the game and posted a 52-19 edge in shots, en route to a 20-1 victory over the VMI Keydets in Southern Conference men's lacrosse action contested Saturday in Richmond, Va. It was the first Southern Conference game in the sport for either school.

After Richmond (3-2, 1-0 SoCon) led 11-0 at halftime and 19-0 with 8:45 remaining, the Keydets (0-5, 0-1 SoCon) averted the shutout in the fourth quarter. Brad Nardella scored, his fifth tally of the year, off a Mike DeBlasio feed to put the Keydets on the board with 8:30 on the clock. UR added a final goal late to account for the final margin.

The team stats told much of the story of the game, as although faceoffs were relatively even, with VMI winning 12 and UR winning 14, the Keydets turned the ball over 29 times, with 17 being forced by UR players. The home team, meanwhile, committed just nine turnovers. The Spiders were 21 of 21 on clear attempts, while VMI was 13 of 22.

In its victory, Richmond was led by seven points from J.P. Forester, who had three goals and four assists. Former Keydet Mickey Hofmeister was one of two Spiders to have three points, as he scored two goals and added an assist. All told, 13 Spider players had at least one goal in Saturday's game.

For VMI, Evan Windisch had 13 saves in the first half against 31 Richmond shot attempts. Joe Riccadonna and Logan Moore combined for nine stops in the second half, while Pat Hine led the team with five groundballs.

VMI lacrosse will return to action Sunday, when the Keydets take on the Air Force Academy at the Landon School in Bethesda, Md. Game time is set for 11 a.m.
