PASADENA, Calif. - It was a day of history-making moments for the VMI water polo team, as the squad swept its final day of action on its yearly California road trip Sunday, posting the first shutout in program history and tying the most goals in single-game Keydet annals as well.
VMI shut out Macalester 16-0 in its first game Sunday behind four goals by Shelby Barkley and a Catie Berry clean sheet, and the Keydets downed Caltech 22-4 in their nightcap, a game that tied the most goals VMI had ever scored in a single contest.
The day's opener saw nine different Keydets score as VMI raced out to an 8-0 halftime lead and never looked back in downing the Macalester Scots, 16-0. The shutout was the first in program history, as the Keydets had a previous best defensive effort of one goal allowed, accomplished in 2014 against Caltech.
In the nightcap, VMI sprinted to an 11-0 advantage before giving up a goal, giving the team a 46:27 shutout streak dating back to the fourth quarter of Saturday's match against California Baptist. Haley Scott scored five goals to pace the scoring output, while Elise Reed added four scores and Cecilya Lundy and Heather Magill tacked on three apiece.
The Keydets finished their California trip with a 4-2 mark, the first time the team had been over .500 during its annual trip to the Golden State.
VMI water polo will return to action March 21, as the Keydets participate in MAAC action in Loudonville, N.Y. VMI's first game of the day will be against Marist at noon.
NOTE: The NCAA scoresheet for VMI/Caltech wrongly listed the final score as 23-4. The correct final score was 22-4 and the release has been edited above to reflect this. We apologize for any confusion.
