Track and Field Back in Action Friday at Liberty

VMI track and field returns to action Friday, as the Keydets open up competition at the Liberty Quad, hosted by Liberty at the Tolsma Indoor Track Center in Lynchburg. Action gets underway at 12:30 p.m. Friday, and then resumes with the conclusion of the heptathlon Saturday morning at 11 a.m.

How to Follow

Fans can follow along with the action with live results, provided by Liberty.

Last Time Out

The Keydets posted six IC4A/ECAC qualifying marks over two days of action at the YSU National College Invite in Youngstown, Ohio. Avery Martin had two of those, qualifying in the 1,000 and then winning the 800 in meet record time the following day. Martin has now qualified for the IC4A meet in three events over the first three meets of the indoor season.

Events to Watch

Men's Shot Put

Jordan White has put up massive personal bests this season, including an IC4A qualification in the shot put last weekend at Youngstown State. He currently ranks fifth in the weight and second in the shot on the SoCon performance list, and this could be his final tuneup before the conference meet in two weeks. There, he could face essentially the same field twice, as four of the top five spots in both the weight and the shot are currenly occupied by the same individuals.

Men's 3,000-Meters

Looking at the field for this year's conference meet, Western Carolina and Furman could dominate the sprints and the mid-distance races, with a handful of exceptions laced through in both instances. Each point that another team could steal in those events could be critical, and with that in mind, the Keydets have five runners entered here. Daniel DeNijs is the top-ranked Keydet here, currently sitting 10th in the conference standings.

Women's 800-Meters

Kennedy Flynn is one of two VMI entrants here after moving into the top six in program history in both this event and the 1,000-meters last weekend at Youngstown State. Another second improvement on Friday would move her into fifth all-time at VMI in this event.

Next Time Out

The Keydets return to action Feb. 21 in their final tune-up for the Southern Conference Championships, as the team competes at the JDL Fast Track in Winston-Salem, N.C.
