BALTIMORE, Md. - Christian Shaner and John Kelly had three podium finishes apiece, leading the VMI men's swimming and diving team to a split of a tri-meet held Saturday at Loyola in Baltimore, Md. The Keydets (2-4) defeated Howard 158-68, but lost to the host Loyola squad 164-75.
Shaner had one of two Keydet victories of the day, winning the 100 fly in 53.49 seconds. He also finished third in the 200 (1:49.09) and led off the runner-up 200 free relay squad that included Kelly, Christian Purdy and John Lancaster. That unit clocked in at 1:28.77. Kelly, meanwhile, was victorious in the 50 free (21.70) and was just outtouched at the wall in the 100, finishing second in 47.72.
Purdy was second in the 50 free (22.52) and Matt Johnson placed second in the 1000, timing in at 10:24.07. Finally, Bret Tomajczyk was third in the 100 breast with a time of 1:05.11.
VMI men's swimming and diving will return to action when the squad opens the spring portion of its campaign Jan. 23, when the Keydets take on Ferrum and Washington & Lee in a tri-meet at the Generals' home pool.
