Lacrosse Keeps it Local at No. 8 Virginia Monday

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -- The Virginia Military Institute men's lacrosse team will not have to travel far for its next road game as the Keydets head to Charlottesville, Va. to take on No. 10 University of Virginia Monday night at Klöckner Stadium. The opening draw for the in-state game is slated for 7 p.m.

Weather.com Report
Monday's temperatures will reach the mid-40s with sunny skies. There will be light winds around 5 miles per hour in Charlottesville during the day. Temperatures will drop quickly near game time, dipping into the low 30s. There is an 80 percent chance of snow, but the threat is later in the night.

The Series
Monday's meeting will be the 20th meeting all-time between a varsity VMI squad and Virginia. The teams first played in 1949, but VMI was a club team at the time. The first varsity meeting was in 1950, a 14-4 Cavalier win in Lexington.

After 38 years of not competing against one another, the teams rekindled the series in 1988. No. 3 Virginia took the win 18-5 in Charlottesville.

VMI has squared off with a ranked Virginia team 15 times, including each of the last six meetings. The Cavaliers were ranked 10th in the March 17 USILA Coaches' Poll and the Inside Lacrosse/Warrior Media Poll.

On This Date: March 24
VMI has played on March 24 seven times in program history, including two games on the road. The Keydets are 2-5 on this date, and 0-2 on the road. The bright spot, however, is that arguably the biggest win in program history was on this date as VMI topped No. 13 UMBC 13-10 on March 24 in Lexington. The last time VMI played on March 24, the Keydets suffered a 13-12 overtime loss on the road at Jacksonville.

National Rankings - March 17
As a team, VMI is currently ranked 7th in the country in caused turnovers per game, forcing opponents into 9.88 per game. Junior defenseman Tyler Prasnicki is currently ranked ninth in the country and second in the Atlantic Sun in the same category, forcing 2.38 opponent errors per game. Freshman Tom Brown is 27th nationally with 1.75 per game.

Junior goalkeeper Evan Windisch is ranked 14th in the country in saves per game, making an average of 11.63 per game.

Stonewall Defense
Since hosting Detroit and Air Force on March 1 and 2, VMI's defense has stepped up big time. In five of its last six games, the defense has held opponents to just 7.20 goals per game, including just four against Air Force in VMI's lone win this season.

Other facets of the team's game have improved since then as well. VMI's faceoff unit wins nearly 60 percent of its draws (47-79) in games the Keydets hold opponents under 10 goals. In those same games, the Keydets have out-groundballed foes 153-145 and clear at an 80 percent clip (76-95).

Part of holding opponents under 10 goals in those five games has been the play of junior keeper Evan Windisch, who has made 75 saves in those games, averaging 15 stops per game. He makes saves at a 67.6 percent clip in those games.
