CHARLESTON, S.C. - In its second match in three days, the Virginia Military Institute wrestling team fell to southern rival The Citadel 35-3 at McAllister Field House Sunday afternoon. The Keydets got their lone win in the final bout of the day.
Redshirt junior Juan Adams, who competes in the heavyweight, collected a 3-0 decision over Joseph Bexely. Adams scored his points in the second period after starting on bottom and scoring an escape just 13 seconds into the fresh period. The Houston, Texas native got a takedown with 48 seconds left in the period. Bexely opted for neutral to start the third, but neither grappler logged points in the period.
At 157 pounds, Ted Gottwald fell 6-2, which included a riding-time bonus point for his opponent Aaron Walker. Gottwald pulled within one point of Walker with an escape at 1:04 of the third period, but the Bulldog scored a takedown and added 1:57 of riding time.
Like Gottwald, Dalton Henderson's bout was close, but the Keydet fell 5-2 at 125 pounds against Joaquin Marquez. Henderson was in the match to the end, scoring a takedown with 13 seconds left, cutting into Marquez's 4-0 lead to make it 4-2. But Marquez had two minutes of riding time amassed.
VMI is on the road for its next match when it travels to Lewisburg, Pa. on Saturday. Action is set for 2 p.m. at Bucknell University's Davis Gymnasium.
