DAVIDSON, N.C. - Matt Johnson shattered the school record in the 1650 free, beating the old mark by over 13 seconds, but the Davidson Wildcats bested the VMI Keydets in NCAA swimming dual action 176-105 Saturday in Davidson, N.C.
Johnson, a freshman, set his second school record of the season by posting a 16:46.01 time in the event to finish second overall. It broke a 23-year-old VMI (1-3) mark that had stood since 1990, and made Johnson the only swimmer in Keydet history to break 17 minutes in the event. He had set the 1000 free record twice at meets earlier this season.
Also victorious Saturday was Johnson's classmate, John Kim, who dominated the 200 back. Kim posted a 1:57.08 time to win the event by nearly a second and a half. He also was third in the 100-yard version of the discipline, touching the wall in 55.57 in that race.
Connor McMahon posted a runner-up finish in the 50 free, concluding the race in 22.07 for one of three VMI runner-up results on the day. Nate Myers had the other two, finishing second in both the 1-meter (211.40) and 3-meter (212.75) diving events.
In addition, Kodiak Bowers was third in the 200 free (1:53.28), and Christian Shaner had the third-fastest time in the 500 free (5:07.99).
VMI men's swimming and diving returns to action Nov. 9, taking on Gardner-Webb in a dual meet in Boiling Springs, N.C. Action gets underway at 1 p.m.
