CLAREMONT,
Calif. – The VMI women's water polo team headed west for the first time in the
program's brief history, wrapping up action on Saturday at the Claremont
Convergence, hosted by Claremont McKenna-Mudd-Scripps Colleges.
The
Keydets hung tough with several of the teams they competed against, but were
swept in the action. VMI fell 22-6 against host CMS, 18-8 against University of
La Verne, 13-11 versus California Institute of Technology and 22-8 against
Chapman University.
Freshman
Mackenzie Perkins led the weekend in scoring, putting away 13 goals, while
fellow freshman Molly Andoe posted 12. Andoe had the weekend's highest single
game total, burying five goals against Caltech. On four occasions during the
weekend, Perkins tallied four markers.
The
team's three seniors had solid weekends as well, with Chelsea Nugent tallying
three goals and Sam Farr with a pair. In the goal for the Keydets (1-4), Amanda
Berrios finished the two-day tournament with 62 saves, including a career-high
tying 22 against La Verne.
The
Keydets continue their west coast swing on Monday afternoon when they take on
the Whittier Poets at 6 p.m. (PST/9 p.m. EST).
