BOONE, N.C. - Despite a pair of victories from senior Matthew Brock and freshman Juan Adams, the VMI wrestling team fell to Appalachian State Friday night. The Mountaineers collected the 37-9 Southern Conference victory at Varsity Gymnasium.
With his 6-0 blanking of Jesse Johnson, Brock collected his 28th win of the season, moving a step closer to becoming the 22nd member of VMI's 30-Win season. Brock, who was ranked No. 25 in the most recent NWCA Coaches' Poll for the 174 pound class, logged his 18th shutout of the season.
The Richmond, Va. native also improved to 2-0 on the season when he runs into wrestlers from Appalachian State, which improved to 11-3 overall and 5-0 in the SoCon.
The Keydets' only other victory was a fall from freshman Juan Adams, whose pin came late in the match as he finally stuck Joe Cummings on his back at the 5:54 mark.
With the match beginning at 165 pounds, the Keydets (5-8, 2-3 SoCon) fell into a quick 4-0 hole, but Brock's three points helped breath life back into the match for VMI, cutting the lead to 4-3. But the Keydets dropped the next two bouts, including a forfeit at 184 pounds.
Adams' pin once again brought life back to VMI, but the Mountaineers rounded out the match with five wins, including four with bonus points.
VMI continues its weekend in North Carolina as the Keydets head to Raleigh on Sunday for a tri-match with NC State and Indiana. The Keydets wrestle Indiana at noon at Cardinal Gibbons High School in Raleigh.
