Complete Brackets

MILELRSVILLE, Pa.  – Five attached wrestlers represented VMI at the “Shorty” Hitchcock Memorial Classic on Sunday, hosted by Millersville University. Freshman Van Grimes fared well during the tournament, reaching the fourth round of consolations behind a pair of wins.

After falling in the first round of the main bracket, Grimes bounced back in the second round of the consolation bracket after getting a bye in the first round. The 165-pounder hit double-digit points in his next match as he advanced 10-7 over Binghamton's Angelo Bortoluzzi.

Grimes continued to put up big numbers in the third round, knocking out Josh Snook, who was wrestling unattached for the University of Maryland, 6-1. Grimes' afternoon came to a halt in the next round however as he fell to Virginia Tech's Issah meade 6-1.

Also in the 165-pound bracket, Hardy Hendren picked up his first win since Dec. 3 at the Davidson Open. After dropping into the consolation bracket, Hendren put up his second biggest point total of the year, defeating Jared Rector 13-8. Hendren's day was stopped short in the next round however, falling by major decision to American unattached wrestler Zeke Gammill.

Ted Gottwald was the only other VMI wrestler to advance in either bracket on a win, collecting an 8-3 decision over Lock Haven's Joe Salinetro 8-3 in the second round of the consolations.

The Keydets return home to The Thunderdome this Friday as they host Southern Conference rival Gardner-Webb. Action is slated to begin at 7:30 p.m.
