Keydets Downed by Black Knights in Battle of Service Academies, 1-0

LEXINGTON, Va.- In an evenly played match for the first 78 minutes of the contest, the Army Black Knights broke the scoreless match on a goal off the foot of Kyle Golonski at the 78:53 mark to take the first meeting between the two service academies in program history Fri, Sept 2 at VMI's Patchin Field. VMI's Junior goalkeeper Taylor Feuerstein made seven saves in the losing effort for the Keydets.

After a brief feeling out period, the VMI (0-2, 0-0 Big South) offense caught steam in 24th minute, as the Keydets earned a free-kick from 30-yards out that was taken by junior Kip Zechman. However, the shot was denied by Army keeper John Marinelli in the first true test of the match for either side.

Army (2-1) continued the free-kick trend with 18 minutes left in the first half, as a Josh Koeppe attempt from 30-yards out was drilled into the VMI wall, leaving the score even at 0-0.

The best chance of the opening stanza came in the 32nd minute, as a diving header was taken off a service from the left flank by Army's Elliott McGilbra inside the six. However, Feuerstein was up to the task, and made the first of several key stops to keep the match scoreless heading into the half.

The 207 fans in attendance were treated to the Keydets honoring of all-time great Richard Daughtridge '98, at halftime. Daughtridge became the second men's soccer player in VMI history to be inducted into the VMI Sports Hall of Fame at tonight's banquet. He was presented with a 2011 VMI red & white jersey by former head coach and current VMI academic counselor Stephen Ross. Also on hand was Gary Morgan '81, the other soccer player that is a member of the VMI Sports Hall of Fame.

The Keydets found a source of offense from Zechman's free-kick opportunities. The trend continued as an attempt from 35-yards out four minutes into the second period found senior Jacob MacIntyre for a header that sailed just narrow of the right post inside the six-yard box.

Army momentarily took control of the offensive flow of the match in the 58th-minute, as the Black Knights earned three corners and a golden opportunity that was gobbled up by Feuerstein in a five-minute span.

Play opened up for both sides in the final 20 minutes of action, and the persistence paid off for Army nearly 20 minutes later, as a cross from the left flank found the foot of Golonski. The initial shot rattled off the right post, but a failed clearance by the VMI backline resulted in a rebound that Golonski beat Feuerstein with in the lower left corner of the net to give Army the eventual game winner at 1-0.

The final Keydet opportunity of the afternoon came in the 83rd minute. The Keydets earned a corner from the left end, and  Zechman's service found the head of the leaping freshman Max Farinholt. The leaping effort was to not avail for the freshman, as the attempt sailed narrowly wide right to preserve the Black Knight victory.

VMI was outshot in the contest by a 20-8 margin. The Keydets were also doubled up in corner attempts, 6-3

Marinelli made one save in goal for the shutout, and improves to 2-1 on the season. Feuerstein falls to 0-2 on the year.

VMI returns to action Sun., Sept. 4 at 1 p.m., as the Keydets will play host to NJIT from Patchin Field. Live stats will be available via VMIKeydets.com.
