CHARLOTTE, N.C. - For the second time this season, VMI shortstop Sam Roberts has been named the Big South Conference Choice Hotels Baseball Player of the Week, for games played April 11-17, as announced by the conference office Tuesday.
Roberts
had a sensational week at the plate, going 11-15 ( =.733) in four road
wins last week. He also walked six times, including four on Sunday to
tie a school record, and drove in nine runs -- including a lead-off home
run in game two at Charleston Southern. In addition, he swiped six
bases in seven attempts and scored eight runs, including four in
Saturday's 15-12 Keydet win against the Buccaneers. All told, Roberts
reached base in 18 of 23 plate appearances ( =.783 OBP), including
9-of-11 against Charleston Southern. Other than a sacrifice fly in the
CSU opener, Roberts was retired only once by the Bucs, going 9-10 with
all six of his walks. He also picked up a save in the Saturday CSU
game, as well as working two scoreless innings in Wednesday's
non-conference victory at William & Mary.
VMI will be back in action tonight, taking on VCU at the Diamond in Richmond. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
