CLINTON, S.C.-
Riding a two-match
unbeaten streak, the VMI Keydet soccer team was defeated 3-1 by the
Presbyterian College Blue Hose Sat., Oct. 1 in Clinton, S.C. Keydet senior
co-captain Brandon Gary had the lone VMI score in the 86th minute on a header
off a free-kick.
VMI (1-9-1, 1-1 Big South) held
the Blue Hose attack scoreless in the first stanza of action, but Presbyterian
College (1-8-1, 1-0 Big South) blew the match open early in the second-half,
scoring a trio of goals in 12 minutes. After Jonny Mercado converted a penalty
kick in the 50th minute, teammate Ignacio Monchetti extended the PC
lead to 2-0 six minutes later on a run down the left flank that beat VMI
goalkeeper Taylor Feuerstein in the lower-left portion of the goal.
The final PC goal of the match
came five minutes later, as Josh Carter crossed a ball inside the 18 that was
headed home by Matt Palma to stretch the lead to 3-0 with 30 minutes remaining.
VMI got on the board in the
86th
minute when a free-kick by junior Matt Seinfeld was headed home by Gary to
bring the match to a 3-1 count. The helper was Seinfeld's third of the season,
and Gary's score was the first of the season.
Feuerstein made 11 saves in the
loss, while Ethan Watson and Tanner Osborne combined to stop two shots on the
afternoon. Junior Kip Zechman led the Keydets with three shots on the match
while Byron Quinatoa had six for the Blue Hose.
