CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.- The VMI wrestling team suffered a pair dual match setbacks Sun., Jan. 16 afternoon as the Keydets were dropped by the University of Pennsylvania 33-6 in the first match of the day and 41-3 by the University of Virginia in the nightcap. Senior Josh Wine, junior Matt Brock, and freshman Nick Emison rounded out a trio of Keydets that secured victories on the day.
Against Penn, the Quakers won the first four matches before Emison gave the Keydets the first team points of the match at 157 lbs. The VMI (2-4) freshman began his match against Jordan Michelson with a takedown :27 seconds into the match to take the 2-0 lead in the bout. After a scoreless second period, Emison secured a pair of reversal points with 1:07 left in the match, followed by a near fall point, and earned a riding time point to take the match 6-0 and improve to 2-8 on the year.
VMI squeaked out its second with of the match at 174 lbs., as Brock battled Penn freshman Canaan Bethea, who entered the match with a 12-9 mark. The match was free of scoring until the end of regulation, when Brock was awarded a riding time point to take the match by the narrow 1-0 margin to improve to 10-9 on the season.
Another close match went Penn's way, as No. 14 Josh Wine squared off against Penn freshman Kyle Cowan (11-9). Following a scoreless first period, Cowan earned a pair of reversal points to take a 2-0 lead heading into period three. Wine earned an escape point with :19 seconds left, but was unable to capitalize on a late takedown attempt to drop the contest 2-1 and fall to 8-3 on the year.
Against UVA, Wine helped the Keydets avoid the shutout, defeated Cavalier heavyweight John Danilkowicz 5-3 in overtime. The match was tied 1-1 after three periods of regulation action, as each wrestler earned an escape point. Following the second overtime period, Wine was able to collect three points on an escape and a takedown to take a 5-2 lead. Danilkowicz earned a late escape point, but it was to no avail as Wine Captured his ninth win over the season, 5-3.
VMI returns to action on Thurs., Jan. 20 at 7:30 as the Keydets host George Mason University from Cocke Hall. Live stats will be available. Admission is $5 for adults, and students of any kind will be admitted for free.
