Spangenberg Earns Pair of Additional Freshman All-American Honors

LEXINGTON, Va.- After being named a Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American on June 9, VMI's Cory Spangenberg earned a pair of additional Freshman All-American honors this week.

Monday afternoon, the VMI second baseman earned Second Team laurels from the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA). He was then tabbed to the Ping! Baseball Freshman All-American Second Team Tuesday morning, joining approximately 14 players whose teams had qualified for the NCAA Tournament.

Spangenberg earned the honors following a season that saw him set new school records for hits, runs and total bases, and be named Big South Freshman of the Year at the campaign's conclusion. He was just the third Keydet to be named a Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American, joining Kelly Sweppenhiser (2003) and Travis Smink (2006).  This season, Spangenberg ranked among the top 10 in the Big South in seven different offensive categories including hits, runs, home runs, stolen bases and batting average.

A Second Team All-Conference selection at second base, Spangenberg became just the second player in school history to amass at least 10 home runs and 20 stolen bases in a season, doing so by hitting 11 round-trippers and swiping 24 bags.  Against Big South opponents, he reached base safely in 28 of 30 contests, collecting hits in 26 games.

This summer, Spangenberg is competing in the Valley Baseball League with the Winchester (Va.) Royals.  Through eight games in the wood bat league, he leads the circuit with 16 hits and a .471 batting average.
