The Richmond Times-Dispatch recently ran a feature on former Keydet Reggie Williams '08, as he continues his standout play for the Golden State Warriors. (Article linked at top of page.)
Williams, meanwhile, led the Warriors to a 121-103 win over the Los Angeles Clippers at Staples Center Sunday evening. Williams netted his best all-around effort in his second start of the season, scoring 25 points, grabbing six rebounds and handing out seven assists in the win, playing a team-high 42 minutes. The victory moved Golden State head coach Don Nelson to within three victories of passing Lenny Wilkins for the most coaching wins in NBA history. “I think he has a gift," said Nelson of Williams. "He doesn't even
know how big a gift he has because we have just dusted off the surface.
He is a rare basketball player as far as I can see. He is able to have
the mental capacity to understand the total game, read whose open, and
read defenses and score. He's not selfish but he knows he can score. I
think I will be able to do a lot of things with him as we go along that
is why I am so happy we signed him for next year.”
Williams is currently averaging 14.9 points, 3.8 rebounds and 2.5 assists for the Warriors, shooting 51 percent from the floor, 41 percent from beyond the arc and 84 percent from the free throw line. He has now played in 15 games for the Warriors, making two starts, with a career-high 29 points against Phoenix on March 22. This comes after he played 31 games for the Sioux Falls Skyforce of the NBA D-League, scoring 26.4 points per game.
“My teammates and coaching staff have really
helped put confidence in me," said Williams. "I think the D-League is very important
because it gives guys a chance to get experience and exposure. I was
very excited when I got the call to come up. I just came in thinking I
had nothing to lose.”
The Warriors make their final national television appearance of the season on Wednesday night, taking on the Utah Jazz at 10 p.m. Eastern on ESPN. Golden State then makes their final trip to the East Coast next week, playing close to home by taking on the Washington Wizards in D.C. on Tuesday, April 6.
