With another day comes more recognition for VMI's Jordan Ballard, as the senior first baseman was named to the College Baseball Foundation's National All-Star Lineup, Sponsored by Diamond Sports, and as the Southeast Player of the Week by College Baseball Insider Wednesday.
Ballard (Troy, Va./Monticello) was one of 19 players from across all divisions of four-year college baseball to be named to the All-Star Lineup this week. The slugging first baseman hit six home runs in five games last week, hitting .571 with 14 RBIs in 14 at bats. He also drove in at least four runs on three separate occasions, helping VMI to claim just its third national ranking in school history. Ballard was also listed as the Southeast Player of the Week by the website www.CollegeBaseballInsider.com.
On Monday, Ballard became VMI's first-ever Louisville Slugger National Player of the Week while also earning his second career Big South Player of the Week honor. A day later, Ballard became VMI Baseball's first-ever Eastern College Athletic Conference Player of the Week. On Wednesday, Ballard became the first VMI player to earn recognition from the CBF since Robert Crumpler '07 was so honored on the National All-Star Lineup's forerunner, the National Honor Roll, on April 18, 2007.
Ballard and the 30th-ranked Keydets are off to the best start in program history at 15-1. On Tuesday evening, VMI defeated its military rivals, The Citadel, 4-3 in dramatic fashion, coming back from a 2-0 deficit to claim victory over the Bulldogs, who are off to their best start since 1990.
The Keydets and Bulldogs conclude their two-game series Wednesday evening, at Riley Park. First pitch is set for 4:45 p.m., and fans can listen to the game on the VMI Sports Network, available at www.VMIKeydets.com and locally in Lexington on WREL 1450 AM. Fans can also watch the game on the Bulldog Insider, available at www.CitadelSports.com.
