Keydets Edged by Adelphi in OT, 1-0

Box Score GARDEN CITY, N.Y. – In spite of a season-high 10 saves by goalkeeper Brian Sowell, VMI men's soccer dropped a 1-0 decision in overtime to the Adelphi Panthers Friday evening in Garden City, N.Y.

After a game that featured 37 shots, six yellow cards, one red card and 17 saves, the Panthers' (2-1-2) Alex Kouznetsov found the back of the net in the 94th minute, beating Sowell to give Adelphi the thrilling win. The red card, assessed in the 81st minute, forced the Keydets (0-5) to play a man down the rest of the way, giving Adelphi an advantage they would not waste.

Despite the action-filled contest, the first half was relatively sedate. Just 15 of the game's 37 shots were in the opening frame, with nine of them coming off Adelphi players' feet. Sowell stopped five of them, keeping the game scoreless at the intermission.

The second half began much the same way, but in the 66th minute, Adelphi received a yellow card. The caution was a sign of things to come, as it was the first of six cards to be assessed over the next 18 minutes of game action. The final five of those cards came over just 4:15 on the clock, which began with a scrum between the Keydets' Amir Shihata and Adelphi's Dan Larenius at 79:57.

That time period had ended with the final yellow card at 84:12, and the game was still scoreless. It remained so into overtime, in spite of six VMI shots on goal in the second period. Panther keeper Kyle Blackmer stopped all of those attempts, Sowell stopped five second-half Adelphi efforts and the game headed for extra time.

In the overtime period, Adelphi took control of the pace. The home team attempted three shots, with Kouznetsov's game-winning score being their 25th shot attempt of the day.

For the game, the Panthers outshot the Keydets 25-12, with the shots-on-goal differential being considerably smaller, 11-7. Sowell stopped 10 shots on the evening, with Blackmer making seven total saves for Adelphi.

VMI men's soccer will return to action Sunday, as the Keydets continue their road swing by traveling to Newark, N.J. to take on NJIT. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
