LEXINGTON, Va.- Game one of a Big South weekend series between VMI and High Point has been suspended in the top of the eighth inning due to heavy rain and thunderstorms in the Lexington area. The game will be resumed on Friday evening at 6 p.m. with VMI leading 10-1.
VMI starting pitcher Travis allowed just one run through seven innings of work, scattering six hits while striking out five. HPU starter R.J. Chlebnikow was charged with six runs in one-plus inning of work, walking four while allowing four hits.
Senior second baseman A.J. Yoder reached base each time he went to the plate for VMI, going 3-for-4 with a double, a hit by pitch while also reaching on an error. Sophomore left fielder Graham Sullivan went 3-for-3 with three RBI, while sophomore shortstop Sam Roberts slugged a pair of home runs to account for four runs driven in.
The Keydets took a 4-0 lead in the first inning, thanks to two-run singles by Sullivan and Justin Topping. Chlebnikow was lifted after facing two batters in the second, giving way to Wally Scott. Roberts then delivered a three-run home run off of the reliever, giving VMI a 7-0 advantage in the second inning.
Smink, meanwhile, settled in by retiring nine in a row and 13 out of 14 batters from the first inning through the fifth. The Keydet bats, meanwhile, came back to life in the fourth, as Roberts, Sullivan and Brian Sandridge each hit solo home runs against Scott.
The Panthers broke through in the sixth, as Eric Marion scored on Alfie Wheeler's one-out single into right field. Smink then induced an inning-ending double play of Bill Manion to end the rally.
Thursday's game will resume before Friday's regularly-scheduled game two of the weekend series at Gray-Minor Stadium.
