RADFORD, Va. ? A five-run seventh inning led Radford to a 10-4 decision over VMI on Sunday in Big South Conference action at the Radford University Baseball Field. The win gives the Highlanders (18-14, 10-6 Big South) a weekend sweep of the three-game series against the Keydets (13-25, 7-10 Big South).
After a two-run double by Tanner Biagini put VMI up 4-3 in the top of the seventh, the Highlanders knotted the game on Tyren Rivers' infield single in the bottom of the frame. A two-run knock from Jeff Kemp gave Radford a 6-4 advantage, which the team continued to build on with two more runs in the seventh and another pair in the eighth.
“I thought that Andrew Deal did an unbelievable job in his first collegiate start,” said VMI head coach Marlin Ikenberry. “We did a good job of battling back and took the lead on a great at bat by Tanner Biagini in the seventh. Then they executed in the seventh to create a big inning.”
Senior Josh Hammonds (2-0) earned the win for Radford, working a scoreless 1.1 innings. Keydet freshman Michael Devine (0-3) suffered the loss, surrendering three runs through 1.2 frames.
Reggie Keen collected Radford's only extra-base hit on the afternoon, an RBI triple as part of his 2-for-4 day at the plate. Nick Minter drove home a pair while going 3-for-4, as did Matt Hillsinger, who was 2-for-3. On the weekend, the Highlanders posted 36 hits, with just two going for extra bases.
Sam Roberts went 3-for-5 for VMI, while both Graham Sullivan and Brian Sandridge were 2-for-4 on the afternoon. Sandridge slugged his fifth home run of the season in the sixth inning, a solo shot that accounted for one of his two RBI.
The Highlanders managed just two runs, one earned, against Keydet starter Andrew Deal, who worked 4.1 innings in his first career start. Abram Williams lasted 6.2 innings on the mound for Radford, surrendering three runs, two earned, while scattering eight hits.
The Keydets return to action on Tuesday, traveling to Norfolk to take on Old Dominion at 6 p.m.
