LEXINGTON, Va. ? JMU scored in all but one inning in handing VMI a 20-2 loss in non-conference baseball action at Mauck Stadium on Tuesday afternoon.
The Dukes (20-17) used a seven-run second inning to break open the contest, thanks to two-run home runs from Bryan Lescanec, Matt Townsend and David Herbek, each with two outs. Sam Roberts (1-3) took the loss for VMI, surrendering eight runs, five earned, on six hits through two innings.
Alex Valadja (3-3) picked up the win for the Dukes, allowing just three hits and two runs through five dominant innings. The sophomore left-hander struck out six Keydets (13-21) and retired 11 of the first 12 batters he faced.
Nine JMU players had multiple hits and seven scored multiple runs off of the six Keydet pitchers that saw action in the game. Mike Fabiaschi went 3-for-4 with a double and three RBI, while Trevor Knight, the reigning CAA Player of the Week, was 2-for-5 with a double, a home run, three runs scored and three RBI.
VMI plated its two runs on a fourth-inning double by Alex Haitsuka, while Brian Sandridge's home run to lead off the fifth capped the visitors scoring. Haitsuka and Sandridge accounted for all of VMI's five hits, as Haitsuka was 2-for-3, while Sandridge went 3-for-3 with a double and his fourth round-tripper of the season.
The game, which was delayed 58 minutes due to rain, was called after eight innings due to darkness.
The Keydets return to action on Wednesday afternoon, playing host to Longwood at 5 p.m. at Gray-Minor Stadium.
