Granger Shatters School Record as VMI Competes at Paul Short Run

LEHIGH, Pa. – The VMI women's cross country team, led by junior Hannah Granger's school record performance, posted solid results at the Paul Short Run, contested Friday morning in Lehigh, Pa.

Granger posted a 21:18 clocking on the 6K course, good for 34th place overall at the prestigious meet. The time was nearly 40 seconds under the previous VMI best, set in the fall of 2007 by Granger at the same event. Led by that performance, the Keydets finished 32nd in the team standings, ahead of Big South competitor Coastal Carolina and just one place behind Army.

“I'm very, very pleased with everyone's performance today,” said VMI cross country coach Paul Spangler. “Four of our five runners ran 5K personal bests en route to the 6K finish, which is very unusual. Hannah ran a great race, and we accomplished what we wanted to as a team.”

Jenna Moye was the Keydets' #2 finisher as the freshman nearly bested Granger's old school record, running a 21:52 to finish 102nd. Leah Schubel and Lindsey Carty were VMI's #3 and #4 runners Friday, finishing in 22:45 and 23:25 respectively, good enough for 190th and 243rd. Corinne Lariviere, making her collegiate debut, wrapped up the VMI competitors with a 23:27 clocking to place 245th.

VMI cross country will return to action in two weeks, as the squad takes part in the Appalachian State Invitational. The meet in Boone, N.C. is set to start at 3 p.m.
