Box Score LEXINGTON, Va. ? The VMI Keydet men's soccer team fell to the Wofford
Terriers Friday afternoon, dropping a hotly contested 1-0 matchup at VMI's Patchin
Field.
This contest
featured six yellow cards, including three in each half of play, as well as a
trio on each team. Twenty total fouls were called, and a great deal of physical
play took place throughout the contest.
Brian Sowell was in
net for VMI, marking the first time the 2007 standout had seen action this
season. However, the Terriers got on the board first, as Wofford's Branson
Hyatt converted his second goal of 2008. The team from Spartanburg, S.C.
controlled the first-half tempo, firing nine shots during the initial 45
minutes of play. Sowell was only forced to make one save however, and the
halftime score remained 1-0.
In the second half,
the teams combined for 12 shots, but only three of them were on goal thanks to
good defense on both sides. Several shots were deflected or blocked by field
players, including a pair of VMI chances deep in the Wofford zone. Those
chances went for naught, including a Jacob MacIntyre attempt off a corner kick
in the 59th minute, as well as a John Sisco blast that went just
high. All told, Wofford's 1-0 lead stood up as the final score.
For the day,
Wofford's Joey Taylor made three saves, while VMI's Sowell made three in his
return to action. The Terriers attempted 17 shots on the day, while the Keydets
mustered seven.
The Keydets return
to action on Tuesday, September 16, as they travel to Raleigh, N.C., to battle
the N.C. State Wolfpack. The contest will mark the second straight season in
which VMI has faced an ACC opponent, and game time in Raleigh is set for 7 p.m.
