Baseball Claims 13-4 Win Over Coppin State

LEXINGTON, Va.? A pair of big innings led VMI past Coppin State, 13-4, in non-conference action on Wednesday afternoon at Gray-Minor Stadium.

The Keydets (21-20) sent 11 men to the plate in the six-run second inning, and held an 8-1 advantage through three innings. The Eagles (3-40) cut the lead to 8-4 in the sixth, before VMI exploded for a five-spot in the seventh to put the game out of reach.

All 13 of VMI's runs came off of Eagle starter Jerry Matos (0-2), who worked 6.2 innings while allowing 14 hits. The win went to Keydet starter Jason Farley (3-2), who allowed four runs, two earned, on six hits in five innings.

Tanner Biagini paced the Keydet offense, going 3-for-4 with three runs scored and five RBIs, with four of those coming on a seventh-inning grand slam. The slam was VMI's second this season and first since Brian Sandridge cleared the bases on March 25 against William & Mary.

Sandridge ran his hitting streak to 14 games with a two-run single in the second, while freshman Graham Sullivan collected the first three-hit game of his career, putting together three singles while scoring three runs.

The Eagles got solo home runs from Oscar Santalo and Harry Williams for their first two runs, then scored a pair in the sixth inning on VMI errors. Coppin State in fact brought the tying run to the plate in the sixth, loading the bases with two outs in an 8-4 contest, before Matt Edwards induced a fly out in his first action in over a month.

The Keydets welcome #15 Coastal Carolina to Gray-Minor Stadium on Friday evening, with first pitch of the three-game series set for 7 p.m.
